Accessibility of your website
· by the Agence Web Premium team, Guéliz Marrakech
Direct answer: An accessible site is a site that everyone can use: visually impaired people, color blind people, people with reduced mobility, but also anyone in the sun with a difficult to read screen. Most fixes are free and improve SEO in the process.
Accessibility is often presented as a regulatory constraint. It is first and foremost a question of customers: a site that is unusable for 10% of visitors loses 10% of its potential.
What exactly is an accessible site?
In short: A site that is effortlessly readable, navigable by keyboard, understandable by a screen reader, and usable without distinguishing colors.
The four most telling tests, to be done in five minutes:
- Navigate using the keyboard alone, with the tab key. Can you reach all the links and fill out the form?
- Zoom to 200%. Does the content remain readable and usable?
- Change the site to grayscale. Does the information remain understandable?
- Cut the images. Do alternative texts describe the essential?
If these four tests pass, you are already above the vast majority of Moroccan sites.
What corrections should be made as a priority?
In short: Text contrast, image alt texts, form labels and heading structure.
- Contrast. Light gray on a white background is unreadable in the sun, for everyone. A sufficient contrast ratio is the most cost-effective correction.
- Alternative texts. Each image carrying information must have a description. Secondary benefit: Google reads them too.
- Form labels. A field without an associated label is unusable for the screen reader.
- Title structure. A single H1, then hierarchical H2 and H3. This is exactly what SEO also requires.
- Explicit links. “Learn more” doesn’t say anything out of context; “See our prices” yes.
What is the real business profit?
In short: An accessible site is better referenced, more readable on mobile in the sun, and usable by a significantly larger audience.
There are numerous overlaps between accessibility and SEO: clean title structure, alternative texts, explicit links, consistent navigation. Google reads a site a bit like a screen reader.
Second benefit, often underestimated in Morocco: outdoor readability. High contrast makes your site usable on a phone in direct sunlight — an extremely common situation.
Third benefit: the elderly audience, who has difficulty with small gray texts and who often have real purchasing power.
How much does accessibility cost?
In short: On an existing site, from 2,000 to 8,000 MAD depending on the size. On a new site, it's free if it's planned in the design.
This is the essential difference: integrated from the start, accessibility costs nothing. Added after the fact, it requires repurposing the colors, components and sometimes the structure.
On all the sites we deliver, the basic rules are applied by default: sufficient contrast, alternative texts, clean title structure, functional keyboard navigation.
Corrections by order of profitability
| Correction | Profit | Difficulty | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contrast of texts | readable for all, mobile in the sun | weak | free |
| Alternative texts | accessibility + image referencing | weak | free at 800 MAD |
| Title structure | accessibility + SEO | weak | free |
| Form labels | usable forms | weak | free |
| Keyboard navigation | full accessibility | average | 1,000 – 3,000 MAD |
| Redesign of components | advanced compliance | high | 4,000 – 8,000 MAD |
