My developer no longer responds: what to do
· by the Agence Web Premium team, Guéliz Marrakech
Direct answer: the priority is not to find him but to regain control of your access. In order: domain name, hosting, site administration, then complete backup. Most situations resolve within one to two weeks.
We receive this case several times a month. Here is the procedure to follow, in order of real priority.
Step 1 — Take inventory of what you control
In short: List your access: domain, hosting, site administration, Analytics, Google file. Write down what you have and what is missing.
Before any action, establish a precise inventory:
- Domain name: under what name is it registered? Check with a WHOIS tool.
- Accommodation: do you know the host? Do you have access?
- Administration: can you connect to the site management interface?
- Professional emails: who manages the messaging?
- Google Analytics, Search Console, Google sheet: what address are they attached to?
This list determines the urgency. If you control the domain, the situation is largely manageable.
Step 2 — Secure the Domain Name as Top Priority
In short: It is the only truly irreplaceable element. If expiration is approaching and you don't have access, act immediately.
A site can be rebuilt, hosting can be changed, content can be rewritten. A lost domain name can be repurchased by anyone, including a competitor.
If the domain is in your name: connect to the registrar, change the password, activate automatic renewal.
If it is in the name of the service provider: follow the procedure on our page recover your domain name.
Step 3 — Recover a full site backup
In short: As soon as you have access to hosting, download all files and export the database.
This backup is your safety net. As long as you have it, you can rebuild elsewhere.
What needs to be recovered: all of the site files, the database export, and any email accounts.
If you have no access to hosting but the site is online, it is still possible to retrieve a static copy. We do it regularly: it's not perfect, but it allows us to start again.
Step 4 — Take back control of administration
In short: If the site is under WordPress and you have hosting, a new administrator account can be created directly in the database.
With access to hosting, a developer recreates an administrator account in minutes via the database.
Without access to hosting but with the domain: you can redirect the domain to new hosting and deploy a copy of the site there.
Then remember to change all passwords: administration, database, hosting, messaging.
Step 5 — Verify your Google accounts
In short: The Google Business Profile is often forgotten. If it is attached to the service provider, request the transfer of ownership.
Your Google listing is an important asset for local SEO. If it is managed by an account that you do not control, initiate a transfer of ownership request — Google offers a dedicated procedure.
Same approach for Google Analytics and Search Console. Otherwise, create new accounts: you will lose history but regain control.
Step 6 — Choose a new provider, with the right guarantees
In short: Demand this time: domain in your name, full access from day one, and code delivered without restriction.
Don't repeat the mistake. The three conditions to be put in writing:
- All accounts in your name, with your email address. The service provider accesses by delegation.
- The code is yours, in full, upon payment.
- A recovery file allowing any developer to take over.
These are our standard guarantees, detailed on our page guarantees.
Emergency level depending on what you control
| What you control | Severity | Priority action |
|---|---|---|
| Domain + hosting + admin | Weak | Change passwords, save |
| Domain + hosting | Weak | Recreate an admin account |
| Domain only | Average | Recover a copy, migrate |
| Accommodation only | High | Recover emergency domain |
| Nothing at all | Critical | WHOIS + immediate formal notice |
| Domain expiring within 30 days | Critical | Take action today |
