Web developer scams in Morocco: warning signs
· by the Agence Web Premium team, Guéliz Marrakech
Direct answer: pure fraud is rare; the most common is the service provider who collects, half delivers, then disappears. Eight signals help to avoid it, and the most reliable remains the refusal to deliver a model before payment.
We are writing this article as a Moroccan agency. It's in our interest for the industry to be clean: every bad experience makes the next customer suspicious of everyone else.
Signal 1 — Full payment requested in advance
In short: No serious provider demands 100% before starting. It is the most reliable signal.
The standard is payment in two installments. A deposit of 30-50% is acceptable. The totality in advance never is.
We go further: with us, nothing is paid before you have validated the model. If a service provider refuses this principle, ask them why.
Signal 2 — No visitable achievements
In short: Screenshots prove nothing. Request addresses of online sites, and verify that they work.
Common pitfall: a portfolio of images downloaded from model banks. Indistinguishable from real work.
Ask for three addresses. Open them. Check that they are active, that the design matches, and that they are real Moroccan sites.
Tip: look at the footer of the sites mentioned. Many developers sign their work there.
Signal 3 — The domain name in its name
In short: If the domain is registered in the name of the service provider, you do not own your site. This is the most common trap.
We regularly receive blocked customers: the site works, but the domain belongs to a developer who cannot be reached. Recovering takes months, sometimes it's impossible.
Check with a public WHOIS tool: type your domain, look at the registrant name. If it's not you or your business, act immediately.

Signal 4 — An abnormally low price
In short: A complete site at 500 MAD is honestly impossible. It's a theme installed in one hour, without content or optimization.
A decent showcase website requires between fifteen and thirty hours of work. At 500 MAD, this represents less than 20 MAD per hour: no one works at this rate.
What you actually receive: a purchased theme, filler text, no optimization, no tracking. Six months later, the site is broken and the service provider cannot be reached.
Benchmark: below 1,500 MAD, ask a lot of questions. Below 800 MAD, go your way.
Signal 5 — The “first place on Google” guarantee
In short: No one can guarantee a position on Google. This promise signals either ignorance or dishonesty.
Google does not sell organic positions and does not communicate its algorithm. An agency that guarantees first place plays on keywords without any competition — ranking first on “cheap Marrakech Guéliz premium web agency” has no commercial value.
What an honest professional promises: a technically impeccable site for SEO, and measurable progress over three to six months.
Signal 6 — No written contract
In short: Without a contract, you have no recourse. The signed quote constitutes the absolute minimum.
The contract must specify: the exact scope, deadline, firm price, payment terms, ownership of the code, duration of monitoring, and what happens in the event of a delay.
A service provider who refuses to write is a service provider who reserves the possibility of changing his mind.
Signal 7 — Slowness in responding before the sale
In short: If it takes three days to respond to a quote request, it will take ten to correct a bug.
The commercial phase is the moment when a service provider is most motivated. Its reactivity will only decrease afterwards.
Simple test: send a message on a Saturday afternoon. Note the response time. This is an excellent indicator of post-delivery service.
Signal 8 — No physical address
In short: A service provider without a verifiable address is a service provider who can disappear without a trace.
A real address, a Google Business Profile, a landline number or a company identifier: all elements that make disappearance costly.
We receive in Guéliz, Marrakech. Many clients come before signing — and this is often what wins their decision.
