Is your site still bringing you customers? If the answer is hesitant, it may be time to consider a redesign. Here are the 5 telltale signs.
1. It's over 3 years old. Web design evolves fast. A 2019 site almost always looks dated next to modern competitors. Customers judge your seriousness from your site in 5 seconds.
2. It's poor on mobile. Most traffic on our client sites comes from phones — verifiable in the stats of every site we deliver. If your visitors must zoom, wait, or if buttons are tiny, you lose most of your prospects.
3. It's slow. Beyond 3 seconds, half the visitors leave. Google also penalizes slow sites in ranking. A slow site costs money every day.
4. It generates no contacts. No visible WhatsApp button, complicated form, undiscoverable number: your visitors go to the competitor who makes contact easy.
5. It no longer reflects your business. New services, new positioning, new photos? Your site must tell your brand's current story — not the one from 5 years ago.
How to ace the redesign? 1) Keep what works (content, existing SEO). 2) Set a clear goal (more quotes, more sales). 3) Choose a design that reflects your positioning. 4) Don't lose your SEO: redirect old URLs. 5) Plan analytics tracking from day one.

A full redesign isn't always the right answer. Three cases justify a rebuild: an outdated technical base that can't be updated, navigation visitors don't understand, and a structure that blocks any SEO progress. In all other cases, fixing in batches is cheaper and faster.
This diagnosis should precede any quote. We do it systematically, and it regularly concludes a redesign is unnecessary.
The redirections, main point of loss
A redirect plan is prepared before go-live, not after. It's the one step you can't catch up properly once the site is published.
What must be kept exactly as is
- The addresses of pages that earned you traffic.
- Content that generates inquiries, even poorly written: it will be improved, not deleted.
- The Google Business Profile — never recreate it: a new profile loses its review history.
- The domain name, whose age has value.
The diagnosis, a step skipped too often
Before deciding anything, five checks are enough to decide between fixing and rebuilding. They take a few hours, on a live site.
| Check | What it reveals | Possible decision |
|---|---|---|
| Are the pages indexed? | Does the search engine know your content? | If not, a structure or configuration problem — fix that first |
| Does the site display properly on a phone? | Most traffic comes via mobile | An adaptive theme may suffice |
| The loading time | Is the technical base still viable? | Optimization, or a rebuild if the gap is too big |
| Are incoming inquiries tracked? | Does the site generate measurable activity? | If no data, the first step is installing tracking |
| Is the content still accurate? | Prices, services, team, address | Editorial fix, independent from design |
This diagnosis regularly concludes a redesign is unnecessary. A decent but poorly written site is fixed through content, for a fraction of the budget.
Running the redesign without losing existing traffic
- List all current URLs and their stats, before any changes.
- Decide for each: kept as is, kept at a new address, or merged into another page.
- Prepare redirects before go-live, page by page, not by category.
- Keep content that generates inquiries, even imperfect: it will be improved, never deleted without a redirect.
- Put the new site live, then check in the following days that redirects point to the right place.
Post-launch verification is part of the job. A misconfigured redirect isn't visible when hovering the site — it shows in technical reports.
What to do from day one of a redesign
- A full backup of the old site, accessible even after the switch.
- Kept access to previous stats: the only comparison base available afterwards.
- A document listing URLs and their destinations — useful for years, including to the next provider.
- Written confirmation that the domain name stays registered in your name.
These four items cost little at redesign time and are extremely hard to rebuild afterwards.
Choosing the switchover moment
A redesign shouldn't be published anytime. High-activity periods — peak season, sales campaign, trade fair — are the worst: the slightest incident hits at the worst moment, and no one has time to handle it.
The switch is planned early in an ordinary week, never on a Friday afternoon, never just before a holiday. You must also be able to watch the following days: redirects, forms, phone display, and message reception.
