Local SEO in Marrakech: the complete checklist to get found

Lever 1 — the Google Business Profile

It's the starting point for any local business. Fill in the exact company name, precise address, real opening hours, primary and secondary categories, and publish authentic photos. Incomplete listings — no hours, no photos, vague category — are noticeably less visible.

Publish regularly: news, a completed project, an offer. A lively listing surfaces more than an abandoned one. And answer all reviews, including critical ones.

Lever 2 — pages targeting real queries

Nobody searches for “Home”. People search “website creation Marrakech”, “dental clinic Guéliz”, “car rental Marrakech airport”. One page per intent, with a title and H1 that use the real phrasing, and content that answers it.

Beware of cannibalisation: two pages must not target the same main query. If they do, merge them or clearly differentiate their angle, otherwise they compete with each other.

Lever 3 — customer reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest local signals, and visitors read them before calling you. Ask satisfied customers for a review at the right time — right after a delivery, a successful job. Spread requests over time rather than soliciting fifty on the same day, which looks artificial.

Never publish an invented overall rating on your site: if it's checked and disproved, trust collapses. Better to display the real source of your reviews.

Lever 4 — the technical side

  1. Speed: compress and convert images. It's the first win on most Moroccan sites.
  2. Mobile: the phone experience comes before the desktop one.
  3. Structure: one unique H1 per page, H2s that break up the content.
  4. Tags: a title and description unique to each page.
  5. Structured data: it helps engines understand who you are, where you operate and at what price.
  6. Sitemap and robots.txt: up to date, accessible, with no duplicate pages.

What doesn't work

Mass-bought links, texts duplicated from site to site, pages created only to repeat a phrase: these techniques produce at best a temporary effect, at worst a penalty. Lasting local SEO is built with a polished listing, pages that answer real questions and authentic reviews.

Finally, no agency can promise a precise position. What can be promised — and written in the quote — is the work: structure, speed, tagging, content, Google profile, follow-up.

What we measure before touching the site

Before any change, we take stock: number of indexed pages, queries where the site already appears, average position, click-through rate, real mobile speed, and the number of inbound enquiries per month. Without this initial state, it's impossible to know whether the work had an effect.

This point is often overlooked. Many SEO projects are judged by feel, for lack of a starting measurement. We record these figures at kickoff and revisit them at regular intervals.

The six months of work, in order

  1. Month 1: fix the blockers — indexing, speed, title structure, completed Google profile.
  2. Month 2: rewrite the service pages around real queries, one intent per page.
  3. Month 3: create the zone pages and cover the frequent questions in dedicated articles.
  4. Month 4: restart customer review collection and publish regularly on the Google profile.
  5. Month 5: obtain verifiable external mentions — trade directories, local press, partners.
  6. Month 6: compare against the starting point and adjust based on what actually moved.

Local and national are worked differently

A local query — “plumber Marrakech” — is won mainly with the Google profile, reviews and proximity. A national query — “website creation Morocco” — requires dense content pages and inbound links, a longer job.

Choose your battlefield. For most of the businesses we support, local is more profitable: less competition, closer purchase intent, and results observable faster.

The mistakes that sink a local site

Four mistakes come up constantly on the sites we audit in Marrakech. A forgotten noindex left over after maintenance. A robots.txt blocking crawling without anyone remembering. The same text copied on the home page, service page and contact page. And a Google profile showing a different address from the site.

None of these mistakes requires a big budget to fix. Yet they explain a large share of situations where “the site exists but never surfaces”.

Tracking the work's effect over time

SEO work is judged on figures recorded at the start: indexed pages, impressions, clicks, average position, and number of inbound enquiries. Without a comparison point, improvement is invisible — and so is the lack of it.

We record these indicators at kickoff, then at regular intervals. It's not a gimmick: it's what lets you decide, after a few months, what to continue and what to stop.

What differentiates local SEO from national SEO

A Marrakech business doesn't fight on the same queries as a national company. Its playing field is searches containing a geographic intent: a neighbourhood, a city, a street. On these queries, volume is lower but intent is far more advanced — the person is looking for a nearby provider, often for today or this week.

Practical consequence: working the Google Business Profile and the per-sector and per-city pages pays more than writing generic articles about a trade.

The elements that really weigh on local search

The realistic timeline of local progress

The first weeks are spent fixing blockers: indexing, information consistency, claimed and completed listing. Then come the per-sector content, then reviews and local links. Counting several months for a visible effect is realistic; promising a first place in a few weeks is not.

No serious service guarantees a position in search results: rankings depend on an algorithm that evolves constantly. What can be guaranteed is the work done, measured and documented.

Frequently asked questions

How long before seeing results in local SEO?

Effects on the Google Business Profile and neighbourhood queries can appear within weeks. Ranking on more competitive queries builds over several months.

Do you have to pay Google to be visible?

No. Google Ads brings immediate traffic but doesn't improve your organic ranking. For a local business, the Google profile and reviews often weigh more.

How many reviews are needed to progress?

There's no universal threshold. Regularity and authenticity matter more than volume: a few reviews per month, obtained naturally, are worth more than a hundred at once.

Does local SEO work for a business without a website?

The Google profile alone may be enough to exist on Maps, but it can't convince or sell: the site remains essential to present, reassure and convert.

Do you do local SEO abroad or outside Marrakech?

We work with clients in Casablanca, Agadir, Tangier, Rabat and Fez, as well as with owners abroad. The work is done remotely with regular checkpoints.
